Like a yo-yo is the best way to describe Wealdstone’s season, writes Craig Whitehead.

For the first three months of the season we struggled and ended up rooted to the bottom of the table, but manager Gordon Bartlett has turned it round.

We currently sit comfortably in mid-table, with relegation no longer a concern, us fans can now enjoy the remaining matches and find some middle ground and start looking forward to next season.

This season we didn’t manage to win a game until the third month of the competition, showing the big step up we’ve made from the Ryman League.

This winter period saw the return of club legend Richard Jolly, a striker who found the net on a regular basis in his first two spells with the Stones.

It’s coming to the business end of the season, as those television pundits have coined it, so the chat begins about who has been the player of the season – a few stick out for me.

Midfielder Luke O’Nien, back at the club on a season-long loan from Championship side Watford, has impressed and under the guidance of Bartlett has gone from a boy to a man.

Veteran striker Jefferson Louis seems to have found fitness and is in excellent form. Having played for over 30 teams in his career, he may have found a place to stay until he hangs up his boots.

His man of the match performance against Gosport on Monday saw him score a goal and nearly break a post with a powerful shot.

Louis is my player of the season, his arrival at the club in December helped to inspire others and better results followed with his goals.

While the club may not have the outstanding players it had to call upon last year such as Tom Pett, this season has been more of a consolidation after winning a league and learning how to play at a higher level.

The best thing about being a football fan, is the ability to dream. In a few years’ time hopefully we will see this season as a building block towards our promotion to the Conference. We’ve come a long way and we’re not finished yet!
