Curry house has won a string of accolades for their mouth-watering dishes

At first glance, their is nothing to distinguish Ruhit’s from the cream and oil fair of every other “south Asian” in London. The menu is full of dishes like ‘Korma’ and ‘Dansak’ and the decor was quaint at best.

But the minute that you take a seat at one of the few tables in the non descript premises and take a bite out of one of their freshly cooked aromatic dishes, you will forget almost every other curry that you have ever had.

Having won awards for their food from Masterchef to the Bangladeshi Caterers Association, various trophies and certificates are displayed in the centre of the room almost as if you are getting a cast iron guarantee that your food is going to be good.

Tucking into my starter of a fluffy prawn puri, impeccable services meant that we were never waiting long for their food. Apart from my prawns, there was a particularly strong bout of food envy for the Murgh chat, a chicken dish, but the butterfly prawns looked good too.

Yet where Rushti’s really came shined were the main courses that bucked the current trend in South Asian restaurants to make portions smaller and more “cost effective” and were some of the best tasting and largest curry’s that I had ever seen.

My Kashmiri chicken went down a treat, but again I was struck by food envy for the Aloo Patil Chicken which packed just the right amount of punch. The lamb ‘Gosht Kalia’ was also spectacular, but I couldn’t really enjoy it as I had been filled up by copious amounts of naan bread and chicken long before.

It is always nice when restaurants decide that they are going to do something different, but Ruhit’s reminds us that old favourites can also be done well and that curry doesn’t always have to taste like flavoured cream.
