Kilburn Older Voices Exchange will be screening the film at the Kilburn Festival

A film made by a group of community activists will be one of the major attractions at the Kilburn Film Festival next weekend.

Living Seats by Kilburn Older Voices Exchange (KOVE) charts the successful two-year campaign for more benches to be installed in Kilburn and will be screened at the Tricycle Theatre in Kilburn High Road on Sunday, July 10.

Thanks to the campaign, benches were installed on the High Road, outside the entrance to Grange Park, by Kilburn High Road station and in the centre of the High Road.

The film documents their campaign’s progress, from how it gauged opinion – initially through surveying individuals – through to the practical action that led to the installation of permanent seating.

Viewers are also shown the positive effect that the benches will have for the elderly and the disabled, who make particular use of the new seating.

The benches also help people remain independent and make sure that they are able to get out shopping, providing a useful stop-off for those who need it.

The Sunday screening, which coincides with KOVE’S 10th anniversary year, is preceded by a series of shorter films on July 7 between 1.30 and 3pm.

The event features a brief talk and a number of short films about older people’s groups in the area, including the West Hampstead Pensioners Action Group and Kilburn Irish Pensioners.

Living Seats will be shown at 2pm on Saturday July 9. Cost is free.
