Second album from the country and Americana-loving Foo Fighter is good, earnest fun.
This album of classic honky-tonk covers follows veteran Foo Fighter Shiflett’s decision to learn a load of old-school tunes and hit the road as a covers band.
They loved it, and bowled into Los Angeles’ Studio 606 to record their favourites, playing live, together in one room with minimal overdubs.
These dusted-down, faithful classics sound so fresh they positively bounce out of the speakers.
One thing’s for sure, they’re no cynical genre-surfers; their genuine enthusiasm is palpable, and getting the most out of the likes of the fist-pumping, album-closing climax I Don’t Think Hank Done It This Way takes all of their considerable talent.
From the doo-wops on the doleful Happy Part Of Town to songs chock full of zinging piano and guitar solos and the country mores of pedal steel guitar, the band invigorate each cover.
The propulsive A Woman Like You, the sole original track on the album, fits right in, too.
All done and dusted in under 28 minutes, this is slick, good fun.
