ASHLEY Theophane overcame a broken hand to crown his return to London with a points victory over East African champion Geoffrey Munika.

The 27-year-old welterweight fractured his right hand during the second round at York Hall, but nevertheless knocked Munika down with a sweet left in the fourth.

Munika did get to his feet and saw out the rest of the six-round contest, but it was the Kilburn man who took the verdict by 60 points to 53 and cemented his place in the national top 10 rankings.

"I'm happy with my win. Munika has fought some of Europe's best and is Kenyan and East African champion," said Theophane.

"If I didn't break my hand I would have knocked him out. Junior Witter is fighting the European champion next and hopefully I can get the winner."

Theophane will be running to raise funds for cancer research later this month at Paddington Recreation Ground and also plans to take part in a charity football tournament in aid of All Stars, the club he boxed for as an amateur.

SHEPHERD'S Bush welterweight John O'Donnell will fight on the undercard of the Esham Pickering and Matthew Marsh British super-bantamweight title bill at York Hall a week on Friday.
