West Hampstead slaughter Slough to clinch championship

Three players netted hat-tricks on Saturday as West Hampstead racked up a club record 18-0 scoreline against forlorn Slough to clinch back-to-back titles.

Harry Willetts hammered in five goals, with Tim Wischusen and Chris Bennetts both scoring three against a depleted Slough, who drafted in several junior players to plug gaps in their team.

WH hit nine goals in both halves, with Dave Leech grabbing two and Mark Little, Tom Kimberley and captain Jamie Dru all contributing a single goal to the rout.

The resounding win ensured that the Brent Cross club – who were promoted back to South League Division Two only a year ago – finished the season as champions, although rivals Oxford Hawks lost their last match in any case.

“The game itself wasn’t as enjoyable as the scoreline might suggest,” Dru admitted. “Slough turned up with 10 players and it’s never nice when it’s a team of adults against boys.

“I suppose it was a bit of showboating, but the hard work was done earlier in the season in the games against Oxford, Lewes and Ashford. To imagine this when we got relegated a couple of years ago was beyond anyone’s dreams.

“There’s been a bit of overload in the second half of the season, with so many double headers, so we’ll take a bit of time off and come back in the summer to prepare for Division One. The standard will be higher and the pace faster, so we’ll need to improve again.”
