Wealdstone striker Elliot Benyon remains unfazed by his dry run in front of goal despite drawing a blank for the sixth game in a row.

Benyon has already bagged 16 goals in all competitions since joining the Stones in the summer – but none in his last six appearances, including the 1-0 win over East Thurrock United last weekend.

However, the 29-year-old is confident of rediscovering his scoring form in the near future and also feels that Stones – who had lost their three previous league games – have now turned a corner.

“I’ve been in a lot worse situations before, so I’m not worrying about this,” Benyon told the Times.

“I’m not going to shy away, that’s not in my nature. I’ll keep going for the ball and keep going until I score.

“When you’ve had a few games without a goal you just want one to bounce off your knee and get you going again, but it’ll happen.

“Players have to take responsibility when things aren’t going so well – and we weren’t performing. But if you look at the last three games, we’ve played really well.

“We could and should have been three or four up at half-time [against East Thurrock] – with me being a culprit. I should have taken a couple of those a bit earlier.

“I should have done better – I’m disappointed with myself, and the result got me out of a hole. But we got a massive three points and I’m absolutely buzzing about that.”

In addition to a clutch of chances for Benyon, Danny Green and Stones’ new loan signing Nick Freeman also went close to breaking the deadlock against the Rocks.

But it was another of Wealdstone’s on-loan players, centre-back Liam Goulding, who netted the only goal 15 minutes from time, bundling into the net after a throw-in had been half-cleared.

And Benyon – who recently remonstrated with two spectators following the 2-0 defeat at Hungerford Town after they made disparaging remarks about Stones boss Gordon Bartlett – was quick to praise the club’s fans for their support.

“I want to clarify this – it was literally one or two people out of lots of Wealdstone fans and a couple of the things they said were bang out of order,” said the striker.

“Something had to be said, because I didn’t think it was right to speak about someone who’s been your manager for nearly 22 years with that kind of disrespect.

“Obviously I’ve only been here a few months, but I know that 99 per cent of Wealdstone fans will back you to the hilt, come rain or shine.

“It’s no surprise that our away form is so good because of the following we take. They’re proper fans.

“The noise they make is terrific and we need to start repaying those fans with results like this.”

The Stones go in search of their third straight win on Saturday when they take on Ryman League side Wingate & Finchley in the FA Trophy first round at the Freebets.co.uk Stadium.

Benyon, who was a Trophy finalist with Torquay United when they lost to Ebbsfleet at Wembley Stadium in 2008, added: “We’ve got a hard tie, but a winnable tie.

“If we can get through that, let’s see where it takes us. We want to concentrate on the league because we have belief that we can still make the play-offs – all it takes is a good run.

“But this is a great competition and the good thing is that there aren’t too many rounds. We know Wingate are going to be good opponents.

“They’ll come here and keep things tight and it’s up to us to work hard and break them down and win the game.”
