Wealdstone captain David Hunt feels the team are finally finding some consistency – but have fallen short of their potential so far this season.

Stones are unbeaten in their last six games in all competitions and sit 10th in the National League South table, nine points short of a play-off spot as they prepare to host Maidenhead United on Boxing Day.

But midfielder Hunt, who joined Wealdstone in the summer after a long Football League career with the likes of Leyton Orient, Northampton Town, Brentford, Crawley Town and Oxford United, believes his side should be doing better.

“Until the last two or three weeks, there’s been no consistency because we’ve had a lot of injuries and suspensions and you have to take that into consideration,” Hunt told the Times.

“But that’s football – you get on with it. The lads who play have to step up to the plate and at the end of the day the 11 on the pitch should be good enough to get the results.

“I’m disappointed because I believe, with the team and everything we’ve got set up here, we should be higher. We’ve underachieved so far and, that being the case, we’ve got to be excited about the rest of the season.

“In the last few performances we’ve been playing some good football and we’ve got great togetherness. All the lads have an opinion and they want to win, which is good.

“But talent doesn’t win if there isn’t hard work, so the boys know we’ve got to graft first. It’ll come off the shin, it’ll come off someone’s head and go in the goal, but we can’t take our foot off the pedal.”

Stones’ injury problems increased when they lost forward Jonny Wright and on-loan Accrington Stanley defender Liam Goulding during the pre-match warm-up in Saturday’s FA Trophy tie against Wingate & Finchley.

Goulding has impressed so far during his time at Wealdstone, along with full-back Ryheem Sheckleford and winger Nick Freeman, on loan from Fulham and Wycombe Wanderers.
