Wealdstone midfielder Danny Green believes this year could be the “learning curve” the club needs in order to make a serious push for promotion next season.

Stones have endured a frustrating season to date, with chairman Peter Marsden’s pre-season hopes of a play-off challenge all but impossible as Gordon Bartlett’s men are 18 points adrift heading into the final few months of the campaign.

To compound Stones’ misery, they have conceded eight goals in their last two games – most recently in a 4-1 defeat against National League North outfit Brackley Town in the FA Trophy on Saturday.

And while Green, who has proved to be a solid acquisition since joining from league rivals Margate last summer, has been disappointed with how this season has panned out, he believes it could prove to be a worthwhile experience for the whole squad.

He told the Times: “I think we’ve had a lot of changes in personnel and quite a few injuries as well. It’s always important to have a settled side if you’re going to be successful.

“While that hasn’t been the case for the last few weeks, on the whole it’s definitely been an issue for us this year.

“There are some young lads in the team as well, who will hopefully learn from some of these experiences.

“Hopefully if we kick on between now and the end of the season and the start of next year it will turn out to be a big learning curve for us all.

“Maybe this is the kind of season we needed to really push on for the play-offs next year.”

He added: “There’s a lot of new faces still in the squad so maybe it’s a bit of a bedding in season for us all.

“In the summer the manager may look to add a few other faces and then we can go again.

“To push for the play-offs is going to be a huge ask now, we’re going to need to get some real momentum going and put a winning run together.

“The manager’s obviously very disappointed at the manner of the last two defeats and rightly so, as we weren’t anywhere near good enough.

“We’re capable of so much more, so we understand his frustrations, and we need to bounce back from the last two games and show that we are a good squad.”
