Kilburn Cosmos Ladies’ second-half fightback was not quite enough for them to share the spoils as they lost a spirited derby clash 17-12 to Hampstead.

The Cosmos made a lively start, but lost the ball from a scrum and then gave away a penalty that allowed Hampstead to take the lead with an unconverted try.

The visitors added a converted try four minutes later, but Kilburn kept up the pressure on their defence and gained some reward just before half-time when Fidelma Meenaghan powered through to score.

Hampstead twice crossed the line after the break, but could not ground the ball due to the Cosmos’ solid pack defending – yet it was third time lucky as they broke through the line to make it 17-5.

The home side almost reduced the deficit again when Lucy Zaug and Indi Farrell combined to set Laura Shelton-Smith free for a 10-metre dash to the line, only for a dubious forward pass to be called.

But Kilburn did pull back a second try as Zaug stole through a gap in the Hampstead defence to score, and Meenaghan’s conversion made it 17-12 in the dying seconds.

Kilburn’s men’s first XV are just one game away from clinching the Herts/Middx Two championship following their 31-8 victory at Quintin.

The Cosmos, who are already certain of promotion, will seal the title if they win their rearranged game at Pinner and Grammarians on Saturday.
