KILBURN began the new year in style by beating league leaders Wasps 13-10 to climb to fourth place in Herts/Middx Division One.

Wasps had only lost once in the league prior to Saturday's clash at Gladstone Park, but never managed to get the better of an impressive Cosmos side.

Kilburn flanker Chris Protherough was named man of the match for his tireless work in the loose, while scrum-half Isaac Hendrikse also impressed on his debut for the first XV.

During a tense first half, both teams squandered chances to open the scoring, with Wasps missing three attempts on goal and Kilburn wasting a very kickable penalty.

But the home side dominated scrums and line-outs for much of the first period and it was they who eventually broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time.

In an exhilarating passage of broken play, Cosmos centre Shayne Whyte recovered his own chip kick and offloaded for winger Peter Donaldson to finish off the move in the right corner.

The tricky conversion was missed, but Donaldson added another try after half-time to extend Kilburn's lead to 10 points, although the conversion was again missed.

However, Wasps fought back with a penalty to narrow the deficit and then levelled the scores with a converted try as the ball was spun out to the right for their winger to touch down.

But the Cosmos held firm in the face of Wasps' comeback and Whyte slotted a penalty to regain the lead.

Wasps were virtually camped in the Cosmos' 22 for the last 10 minutes and gave the home side a late scare when they won a penalty in front of the posts on the halfway line, but the kick was short.

Kilburn Cosmos: Morgan (Alongi), Fitzsimmons, Hughes, Trout, Fenlon, Bousfield, Protherough, Craig, Hendrikse, White, D'Aguila (Porter), Whyte, Coghlan, Donaldson, Binns.
