Niall Coghlan scored one try and set up another as Kilburn ended their losing streak with a 24-12 win against Royston.

The Cosmos had lost their three previous games in Herts/Middx Two, but took the lead after seven minutes on Saturday with a spectacular length of field try.

The forwards stole a Royston lineout and the ball was moved quickly to Coghlan, who ran it into the Royston 22 before passing inside for fly-half George Brooke to touch down under the posts.

Brooke converted his own score – but minutes later Kilburn conceded a comical try after a routine kick led to confusion and the ball was gifted to the visitors, who scored in the right-hand corner.

The Cosmos recovered to extend their lead on 26 minutes, driving an attacking lineout deep into the Royston 22 before the ball was spun wide for Coghlan to score in the opposite corner.

And, two minutes before half-time, centre Darren Littlewood emerged from a tackle with the ball to go over just left of the posts, with Brooke adding the extras to make it 19-5 at the break.

Royston reduced the deficit early in the second period as two forward phases from a shortened lineout led to a converted score under the posts.

But the Cosmos finally made the game safe in the closing minutes, shoving back a Royston put-in close to their own line and prop Kane Edgworth pounced on the loose ball for an unconverted score.
