THE COSMOS missed a great chance to down league leaders Cheshunt on Saturday with a spirited but ultimately frustrating display.
Kilburn paid the price for defensive lapses and, in keeping with the rest of the season, failed to capitalise on their chances.
Cheshunt bossed the first half, sending their big forwards close to the ruck, although excellent defence from Scott Aitken, Aly Bursey and fly-half Shane Whyte managed to halt the early raids.
But Cheshunt eventually broke through, with their number eight storming through a gap and offloading to support for the first try and a 5-0 lead.
Kilburn had their chances throughout the first half, but struggled to get clean ball from scrums and rucks. The only points they had to show at the break was an Andy Allen penalty after 30 minutes.
Right on half time, a seemingly harmless Cheshunt back move was shifted to their left wing who beat his opposing man and stepped through the cover defence to score under the posts. The conversion left the Cosmos trailing 12-3 at the break.
Kilburn dominated their opponents after the break, and another Allen penalty cut the gap, but they then wasted two great chances.
The first saw a Kilburn kick gathered and shifted out to the backs, but a poor pass from Richey Cunningham to Gav Smales on the wing was ruled forward and the chance was gone.
Soon afterwards, a great run from Peter Donaldson down the wing took Kilburn to 10 metres from the line, but miscommunication saw the pass go astray and once again Kilburn were frustrated.
Things then went wrong for the Cosmos, as scrumhalf Protherough was sinbinned and Hayden McKenzie went off injured. But while they kept Cheshunt at bay for the rest of the game, they couldn't find a route back into the game.
Kilburn Cosmos: McKenzie, Magee, Zaug, Ledington, Butcher, Aitken, Bursey, Shrubsole, MacManus, Whyte, Smales, Allan, Cunninghame, Donaldson, Riley, Nunes, Protherough, Gordon.
