Tom Pettet hit an unbeaten 42 as Harrow St Mary’s recovered from a poor start at Highgate – but they must wait another week to seal promotion from Middlesex County League Division Three.

HSM were put in by their hosts and slumped to 13-2 after losing both openers cheaply, with Nishil Patel (4) bowled by Carman Mapatuna and Aalok Soni (4) falling to Freddie Barrass.

But Pettet and Robbie Van der Ross (21 not out) steadied the ship and, despite a break for rain, put together an unbroken stand of 65 before a further downpour ended proceedings with the visitors on 78-2 in the 23rd over.

Second-placed Uxbridge, meanwhile, were the only side in Division Three to gain a positive result, beating Edmonton by 50 runs to close the gap on HSM to five points.

But, with Uxbridge still to face fellow contenders North London and Barnes in their remaining fixtures, Saints will be promoted if they gain at least two more points this season.

In the Premier Division, Brondesbury must almost certainly win their last two fixtures to stand a chance of staying up after Saturday’s game at Teddington was abandoned.

The Harman Drive club have still to face the two teams directly above them – Hampstead and Stanmore – and must overtake one of them to avoid dropping out of the Premier Division for the first time.

Brondesbury were unable to close the 11-point gap on Stanmore on Saturday as rain curtailed their evenly-balanced game at second-placed Teddington, with Sam Smith taking 3-34 as the home side reached 133-4 in the 35th over.
