Brondesbury had an “odd day at the office” on Saturday, with the umpires having to consult with each other over three decisions in their home defeat to Enfield to Division Two of the Middlesex County Cricket League.

Captain Adam Wilson was given out to a catch which appeared to have been dropped, and Will Russell was then adjudged to have been caught behind before the officials reversed the decision.

Enfield’s Neil Tilley then felt aggrieved when he was caught by Devang Bulsara – although the visitors successfully chased down the winning target of 189 after initially being 88-5, with overseas player Sam Wilson hitting an unbeaten 78.

“There were a couple of incidents that were a little bit peculiar, it was an odd day at the office,” said Wilson.

There was no complains about the result though: “It was just disappointing not to get 10 points given the situation we had them in,” said the skipper.

“It would have put us right up at the top end of the table rather than in the middle. The league’s incredibly tight and a win can really take you up and likewise a loss can really take you down.

“We’re at halfway after this weekend so I think it’s important that we get a win [away at Acton], take that momentum into the second half and hopefully get on a bit of a run that means that come of the end of the season we’re in that top two that gets promoted.”

Brondesbury were asked to bat at Harman Drive and lost early wickets as Leo Smith (6-74) dismissed Hugh Gimber (2), Tom Shaw (9) and Wilson (5) – the latter due to a disputed catch which required the officials to confer.

Russell was also controversially given out, caught behind but insisting he had not hit the ball, and he received a stay of execution as the umpire consulted with his colleague at square leg and changed his mind.

Rusell went on to make 47 and Jordan Bethel (34), Neil Durand (24) and Sam Smith (30) aided a middle-order recovery, while Buddy Mason added 11 at the tail end before Bron were bowled out for 188 after 50.2 overs.

That initially looked like it might be enough as Stephen Male (3-44) and Sam Smith (2-61) left the visitors in trouble at 88-5.

But no 3 Sam Wilson (78 not out) shared a crucial 64-run partnership with Jake Dudding (29) and went on to lead the visitors to victory at 190-6 in the 48th over, taking Enfield up from ninth place to fifth in the table.
