Hooks ABC had a stellar afternoon at the NABC GB National quarter-finals on Saturday, with two fighters joining Nathan Brown in progressing to the semi-finals of the competition.
In the 57kg weight class, Hooks’ 15-year-old Francie McDonagh produced another top quality display to unanimously beat a game opponent in Jimmy Croxton. McDonagh displayed moments of real class by patiently picking his punches while maintaining an impenetrable defence against a very determined and dogged fighter.
McDonagh’s clubmate Eddie Barrett, 16, also registered an impressive win in the 54kg weight class against highly rated Bermondsey based boxer Dominic Joyce of Fisher ABC.
Barrett dominated a very entertaining contest of high quality where he stayed on the front foot throughout and had the first and last say in every meaningful exchange. Joyce threw everything he had trying to make a breakthrough, but Barrett was too smart and quick to ever be caught in trouble.
Hooks’ coach Steve Newland was understandably delighted with the performance of his fighters.
He told the Times: “This was another big day for Hooks. The boys are not just winning, they are putting in quality displays of boxing.
“There’s a buzz from the crowd every time young Francie gets in the ring. Once again, he didn’t disappoint on Saturday, for me his opponent took too many shots.
“For the second week running Eddie Barrett faced a top-rated opponent yet made him look ordinary. Over the two bouts Eddie probably only got hit four times. For the second week running our boxers were the stand-out performers of the afternoon.
He added: “It’s not just these lads, but the level of performances our fighters have been putting in recently has been nothing short of outstanding and long may it continue.”
As noted, Barrett and McDonagh join 18-year-old Brown in the semi-finals this Saturday at the same location.
