Eddie Barrett continued his impressive form as he added the London Youth ABA title to his list of honours on Sunday.

The 16-year-old Hooks ABC man, competing in the 52kg category, proved too much for the highly-rated England international Jake Pettit to handle as he secured his second title in as many months, after winning the GB National Association of Boys Clubs title back in December.

Barrett proved too fast and too skilful for the Nemesis ABC man, who was unable to follow up his victory over fellow England international and reigning European quarter-finalist, Tommy Roberts, (Repton ABC) the previous week.

To his credit, Pettit brought his aggressive, all-action, power punching to the table, which made a cracking contest.

However. Barrett’s speed and skill ensured he held the ring, picking off Pettit with sharp, southpaw jabs and punishing straight left hands.

Barrett was a clear winner to all present, having dominated the first two rounds, so there was some surprise in the announcement of a split decision, although the third round could have gone to either fighter.

The bout was ultra-competitive throughout, staged in front of a very noisy, appreciative crowd in Dartford.

Barrett’s coach, Steve Newland said: “It was another big performance from Eddie.

“Pettit might have thought he had the job done by beating Roberts, with Eddie being 14 months younger than him.

“But in a competition where Eddie will have to face fighters up to two years older than him, he proved to be strong enough and skilful enough to earn a well-deserved victory, and there’s no reason why he can’t continue to do so either.

“Eddie continues to make top-rated opponents look ordinary, doing so again on many occasions in this fight.”

Next up for Barrett is a clash against MK Victor ABC’s Hamza Mehmood, which takes place in Oxford on Sunday.
