KILBURN Cosmos chairman Phil Morgan was named volunteer of the year at the Pro Active London Awards at Lord's Cricket Ground on Friday.

Morgan was nominated by Brent Council's sports development team in recognition of his work to increase resources for rugby in the borough, and making the sport more accessible to youngsters.

"Winning the award is recognition for how far Kilburn Cosmos has come in recent years in terms of providing access to rugby union for the local community," said the Cosmos chairman.

"I could not have won this if it were not for the fantastic team at Kilburn Cosmos who have worked so hard to develop and maintain mini, youth, women's and men's rugby and make it such a happy club to belong to."

Meanwhile, AFC Wembley were shortlisted for the club of the year award - just two years after being set up with the aim of developing youth football in Brent.

Like the Cosmos, AFCW - who run teams for more than 200 youngsters - have worked hard to establish partnerships with various organisations in the surrounding area.

"To be nominated alone has been a remarkable achievement and one we could not have accomplished without the support of many other people in the borough," said club chairman Trevor Hutton.
