A second-half comeback could yet prove the salvation of Hendon after they stormed to a 2-1 win at Folkestone Invicta.

The win, played out in the Kent sunshine in front of an attendance of 455, saw Kezie Ibe and Marcel Barrington score inside the last 16 minutes to give the Greens all three points.

And while it doesn’t lift them out of the bottom four in the Ryman League Premier Division, it does drag them to within a point of safety with three games remaining.

The first half was a static affair with both teams having opportunities but failing to take their chances, until Folkestone scrambled a lead through Nathan Ferguson in the 37th minute.

Though Hendon upped their performance in the second half, they could not make their progress count in front of goal.

And it looked like it was going to be another one of those days for the frustrated Hendon fans, epitomised by Reis Stanislaus’ lob over the keeper that landed agonisingly on the roof of the net.

Frustration was starting to build in the Hendon players, prompting manager Gary McCann to make changes that proved vital to the result.

The introduction of Guyanese international Barrington brought an injection of pace down the left wing that added to the woes of the Folkestone defence already struggling with the runs of Khale Da Costa.

Hendon’s breakthrough finally came in the 74th minute when Da Costa fed the ball into Ibe, who turned his marker and slotted the ball into the net.

Hendon continued to pressure the Folkestone goal, including a Matt Ball free kick that just sailed over the crossbar.

But moments later, however, Da Costa was again the provider as his ball across the box found Barrington who powered the ball past the keeper in the 82nd minute.

Though Folkestone tried to press for an equaliser in the final few minutes, it was Hendon that had the better chances with Keagan Cole going close twice, the second an audacious lob that unfortunately hit the top of the crossbar.

Hendon’s remaining games start with a home tie against Metropolitan Police at Silver Jubilee Park on Saturday before travelling to near neighbours Harrow Borough on Easter Monday.
