Mile Jedinak hat-trick saw Socceroos beat Honduras in play-off on Wednesday
Queens Park Rangers midfielder Massimo Luongo was an unused substitute as Australia beat Honduras 3-1 in the second leg of their play-off to qualify for next summer’s World Cup.
The 25-year-old had played the full 90 minutes of the first leg on Friday, which ended in a goalless draw in Honduras.
Luongo dropped to the bench for the second leg in Sydney and watched from the sidelines as Aston Villa midfielder Mile Jedinak netted a hat-trick to send the Socceroos to Russia.
Despite not playing in the second leg, the former Swindon Town midfielder will no doubt be delighted to see his country reach the World Cup.
Luongo will now spend the rest of the season with QPR looking to push his claims to be named in Australia’s 23-man squad for next summer’s tournament.
The Socceroos will discover their group stage opponents next month when the draw takes place in Moscow on December 1.
