Stones ended last season unbeaten in five league matches

Wealdstone skipper Sam Cox is hopeful the Grosvenor Vale club will pick up where they left off when they National League South starts up again on August 5.

Stones finished last season unbeaten in their final five games to narrowly miss out on a place in the play-offs.

With the South division expected to be wide open this term, Wealdstone know a good start to the campaign would put them in a strong position to challenge for promotion.

And Cox has full faith Gordon Bartlett’s men can hit the ground running, particularly because the midfielder feels the squad have such a strong bond.

“We’ve got a great bunch of lads and we’ve pretty much kept the core from last season,” Cox told the club website following the 1-0 friendly win over Fulham under-23s on Saturday.

“We had a great run at the back end of last season and hopefully that can continue into this season.

“It’s all about progressing, building on what we had and hopefully get a bit of success because that’s what we’re here for.”

Trialist Dylan Kearney scored the only goal of the game against Fulham under-23s as Wealdstone began their pre-season campaign on a winning note at home.

Stones will look for more success at Grosvenor Vale again this weekend when they entertain Watford under-23s on Saturday, with a 3pm kick-off.

And while Cox acknowledges victories in friendlies will enhance the squad’s confidence, he believes the displays in each game are equally as important.

“It’s not only about winning games, it’s about the performance as well,” added the Guyana national team captain.

“You also have to try new things in pre-season, like the new formation we had against Fulham under-23s.

“We’ll be experimenting throughout the whole of pre-season and we have some tough games coming up.

“For whoever is involved, it’s all about getting minutes in the bank at this stage of the season.”

Stones have also re-signed defender Jerome Okimo ahead of the new term.
