Rian Bray's late goal cancelled out Spencer McCall's spectacular free-kick for Wingate to earn Hendon a first qualifying replay on Tuesday.

But after their 6-0 mauling of Harrow on Bank Holiday Monday, it was a disappointing outcome for the Greens.

Hendon boss Gary McCann fielded the same starting line-up, while adding Cameron Currie and Montel Joseph to his bench alongside Michael Corcoran and Ollie Sprague.

But Wingate began well and went close on four minutes when McCall’s free-kick found Joe Kizzi, whose scuffed shot was parried by Tom Lovelock before being cleared.

Marc Charles-Smith saw a cross evade Rob Laney, before the home side had three chances in a six-minute spell midway through the first half.

Niko Muir was denied by the legs of Shane Gore and the Wingate keeper was at full stretch to tip a curling free-kick from Matt Ball, before Reis Stanislaus fired just wide of the far post.

The visitors tried their luck from long range, without testing Lovelock, while Reece Beckles-Richards produced some mazy runs and Nathan Mavila’s cross just flew over the head of Laney.

The deadlock was broken two minutes into the second half, though, when Beckles-Richards cut across from the wing and went down under the challenge of Dave Diedhiou, allowing McCall to sent a fine free-kick inside the far post past Lovelock.

McCall then teed up Beckles-Richards, whose 20-yard strike flew just past the post, and Charles-Smith held off Sam Murphy to pick out Laney, whose looping header was saved by Lovelock.

Hendon worked hard to get back on terms, with Jake Eggleton and Sam Murphy making inroads on the flanks, but Sean Cronin held firm in the heart of Wingate’s defence.

McCann sent Kezie Ibe and Ashley Nathhaniel-George on for Stanislaus and Diedhiou, but Zak Joseph and Muir failed to test Gore with shots as the clocked ticked down.

Then, with three minutes left, Ball sent a free-kick into the box and Bray rose to plant a powerful header into the corner of the net.

Hendon had a late chance to win it when Ibe teed up Nathaniel-George, but his fellow substitute sent his shot across the face of goal and past the far post, leaving the two sides to try again on Tuesday.
