Brent suffer spot of trouble in cup

BRENT under-12s endured penalty heartbreak as they went out of the London Cup despite leading three times in their semi-final at Victoria Park.
The visitors were in front approaching the end of both normal time and extra time, but conceded equalisers to a resilient Hackney side and were beaten 4-3 in the shoot-out that followed.
Brent dominated early on with some scintillating midfield play and the home side survived a series of near misses, with Obina Joshua’s cross taking a deflection onto the crossbar before Ricky German’s effort slid just wide.
Shaquille Preston’s finish was ruled out for offside and then a Vinicius Alves close-range effort stuck in a puddle on the line before Brandon Ramsey finally put Brent ahead with a spectacular volley.
Hackney equalised before half-time when a looping ball from 40 yards beat Antwayne Plummer, but the visitors regained their advantage 10 minutes after the interval as Rio Beach dispatched a 25-yard free-kick into the top corner.
With the midfield quartet continuing to push forward and captain Isaac Paiva marshalling a solid defence, Brent looked comfortable until another lob deceived Plummer five minutes from the end.
The dismissal of goal machine German, for his second bookable offence, was a blow to Brent’s hopes in extra time, but substitute Kyle Edwards responded by beating two men and powering home an unstoppable drive to make it 3-2.
Edwards had another goal controversially disallowed – and Brent realised it was not their day when reserve striker Kingsley Eshun, who had taken over the gloves, let a slippery ball through for Hackney’s third equaliser two minutes from time.
Brent coach Chris Ampofo said: “The team can take great confidence from this performance. We have improved as a unit and this will make us stronger.”
