Lewis Driver hopes Harrow Borough’s FA Cup fairytale can be extended further this Saturday – and give the club a boost in their bid to reach the Ryman League Premier Division play-offs.

Borough will meet League One outfit Northampton Town for the first time in their history in this weekend’s first-round tie, and Driver wants them to use the cup run as the platform to get their league form back on track – with Steve Baker’s men currently lying just two places above the relegation zone.

He told the Times: “The buzz around the place is really good, as you can expect. Everyone’s still on cloud nine after the Margate game – the adrenaline always takes you through for a couple of weeks.

“Hopefully the magic of the cup will be in our favour, so maybe our dream can carry on for a bit longer. It’s a target for any non-league team [to reach the first round]. It’s something you set your sights on every year, but it probably only happens a few times in a player’s career [at this level].

“I know the cup’s an easy one for everyone to get up for, but there’s not really any excuses for the inconsistent form we’ve shown in the league this season.

“If we win our games in hand over the other teams we’re knocking on the door of the play-offs, which would be a great position to be in and we’re more than capable of being in.”

Driver accepts the obstacle in front of Borough on Saturday is daunting, with a four-league gap between the two sides, but he is refusing to give up on what would be an almighty cup shock at Sixfields.

“It’s a great achievement by everyone at the club to get to this stage again,” said Driver.

“It’s been six years since we last made the first round so we need to relish every moment of it. We know it will be a very difficult game. There’s a four-league gap but hopefully that won’t affect us.

“We’ll go into the game with no fear and just enjoy our football. We’ve just got to give absolutely everything and stick to our game plan. Who knows what can happen.”

Driver, who revealed that Baker has them in an extra day this week as preparation intensifies ahead of the trip to the League One side, has been pleased with his form of late.

“I was struggling with a couple of injuries at the start of the season, so it was a bit stop-start for me to say the least.

“But I’ve got myself fit again and back in the team, so I’m feeling really confident again and raring to go.”
