QPR boss Gareth Ainsworth hailed the club's 10-day pre-season tour of Austria as a success after their 2-1 win over Vorwarts Steyr on Saturday.

Rangers had lost their first match to Slavia Prague and fell behind to a Jakob Kolb strike on 14 minutes.

But Lyndon Dykes levelled just past the half-hour mark and Sinclair Armstrong claimed a 73rd-minute winner.

The west London club returned to London on Sunday to continue their preparations for the 2023-24 Championship campaign, with further friendlies against AFC Wimbledon and Reading on Saturday (July 22) and Tuesday (July 25) respectively.

And Ainsworth told qpr.co.uk: "This trip has been about hard work, recovery and togetherness.

“The hard work we have done, Hotel Aigo has been brilliant at looking after us with the recovery, and I would say this group is more together than it has been.

“That’s what I wanted – now let’s get this team winning games in what will be a tough, tough Championship.”

Rangers dominated in 35 degree heat at the Liwest Arena and the fans who made the trip were treated to a long-awaited goal for 20-year-old striker Armstrong, who saw a defender's clearance cannon off him and into the net.

“You saw it meant something to him because he got the ball and booted it as far as he could afterwards, that’s the adrenaline in him,” he added.

“With all the chances he has had it was going to take one off his backside to get him off the mark, and he got that.

“His pace is going to cause people so many problems, and his strength. He has got plenty to learn but he has got some raw attributes and he is going to frighten some defences this season.

"It was a good workout and I think the fans here would say it could have been 6-1 or 7-1, it was just one of those games. Their keeper made some unbelievable saves, he had a really good game."

Jake Clarke-Salter and Ilias Chair missed the action as a precaution, after picking up calf and ankle injuries respectively, while Paul Smyth and Armstrsong were kept to just 30 minutes each.

But Ainsworth was pleased to see some of their training ground work paying off.

"They dropped very deep in the second half so we are trying to get the players in the pockets,” he said.

“Raff Pedder did it very well, Taylor (Richards) was trying it and it’s where Chris Willock lives and does his good stuff.

“It was a well-supported fixture for us so thank you to all the R’s fans who travelled from distance. It’s brilliant support and we have got that in droves.”
