A fledgling football team thrashed the competition to emerge as winners of the Sam’s Brent Super Cup at a fun-filled community event.

Youngs FC defeated AFC Wembley, where England player Raheem Sterling used to train, 1-0 in a closely fought cup final at The Pavillion, in Stonebridge, on Saturday.

Hundreds of residents turned up to the community event which was organised by Stonebridge representative Cllr Zaffar Van Kalwala and supported by Sam’s Chicken and Hyde Housing.

The tournament included a range of free activities such as giant screen Nintendo wi’ games, arts and crafts, music and information stalls.

Cllr Kalwala, whose aim was to encourage youngsters to lead more active lifestyles and divert them from anti-social behaviour and gangs, said: “Well done to everyone who took part. This was a fantastic event which celebrated all the positive things about our young people as well as bringing the whole community together.”

Keith Gussy Young, who set up the family-run Young’s Football Club last year, said: “It’s been my dream to start up a young football club and in our first year to achieve this win is just brilliant.

“We’ve been running our football coaching school, for three to 13 year-olds, for nearly four years and have been passing our boys to other clubs. We started our own club as the boys wanted to stay with us and we have five teams now which is great.”

He added: “Through our coaching school we mentor children as well. If we see certain behaviour patterns emerging we speak to the parents. It’s fantastic we’ve come through to win this. It goes to show you don’t have to be at the top to win.”

Harlesden Hawks and Hillside Athletic, finished in third and fourth place respectively.

Jayden Williams from Youngs FC was awarded player of the tournament as well as finishing joint top scorer with Mohammed Habib, of AFC Wembley, who both shared the Golden Boot Award.

Harlesden Hawks received the FairPlay Award while Hillside Athletic picked up the Good Effort Award.

Sam’s Chicken said: “Congratulations to Youngs FC for winning the Sam’s Brent Super Cup. It was great to see everyone enjoying the football and all the fun activities. We are always delighted to help Brent children to achieve their best.”
