Work to build a new housing development on the former site of a football club in Cricklewood is underway.
Claremont Village is being built on the land formerly used as the home of Hendon FC in Claremont Road, after almost seven years of it moved to Kingsbury.
The development on the 1.74 hectare site will see the creation of 135 homes of which 29 will be affordable.
The village includes a selection of one and two-bedroom apartments and three and four-bedroom houses.
Fairview New Homes, the developers, will make contributions to the local area totalling £376,800 under the Section 106 planning agreement.
This includes £185,000 towards the West Hendon Playing Fields and a further £130,000 towards Kingsdown Town Football Club.
Jim Holliday, sales and marketing director for Fairview, said: “Our Claremont Village development will breathe new life into the former Hendon FC site, and we are pleased to report that work is now underway.”
The site has been at the heart of some controversy after Hendon FC moved out in 2008.
Campaigners had opposed Barnet Council’s decision to sell the land to a private company and two years ago 68 Romanian squatters occupied the land.
They were eventually evicted by police and officers from UK Border Agency who offered them a free flight back to their homeland.
