Wembley Stadium was lit up in the colours of the Belgian flag yesterday in a show of solidarity with the victims of the Brussels terror attacks.
The stadium’s famous arches were tinted black, yellow and red last night in tribute to the Belgian capital which was rocked by terror on Tuesday morning as suicide bombers detonated devices at an airport and metro station leaving 31 dead and 270 injured.
A tweet posted on social media by the Football Association read: “As a mark of respect after the attacks in Brussels, the Wembley Arch has been lit in the colours of the Belgium flag.”
Hundreds of residents and visitors to the stadium have rallied behind the mark of respect by sharing pictures of the iconic arches on social media.
One Twitter user shared his own image of the stadium with the caption: “Nice touch from everybody @wembleystadium #Brussels” while another tweeted “Wembley Stadium in full Belgium Glow tonight.”
Yesterday Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, announced Belgium’s national flag will also be projected onto Tower Bridge, the National Gallery, the National Theatre, Trafalgar Square and the London Eye.
Officials continue to search for missing Briton David Dixon,51, an IT programmer originally from Hartlepool, who has not made contact with his family since boarding the metro train which was blown up, killing at least 20.
