A Wembley optometrist was awarded a rare accolade which recognises his services to eyecare at an industry awards ceremony.

Rakesh Kapoor, store director of Specsavers Wembley and Edgware, has joined an exclusive list of 18 people to have been presented the Fellowship by Portfolio award by the College of Optometrists.

Mr Kapoor said: ‘When I graduated I had an incredible mentor whose advice has stuck with me throughout my career.

“As soon as I was able I made a decision to help others reach their potential, so it’s a real honour to be recognised for this by the college.”

The optometrist was also acknowledged for his charity work for global sight charity Vision Aid Overseas.

He has trekked all over the world, visiting African countries and Pakistan to train optometrists and hold clinics for locals with little or no access to quality eye care.

“The Vision Aid Overseas trips were a real eye opener for me personally, I was shocked at the lack of basic provisions available for partially sighted people in those countries, something we often take for granted,” said Mr Kapoor.
