The Post Office has announced today two crown branches in Brent could close as part of a nationwide programme affecting 37 locations.
The flagship branches in Church Road and Wendover Road, both in Harlesden, are facing the axe however some of the services provided by the branches could be transferred to nearby businesses as the Post Office are looking for franchisees.
The closures will result in the loss of 300 staff and 127 financial specialist roles in total nationwide.
The Communication Workers Union said the closures will bring more “misery” to Post Office workers and the customers they serve.
Dave Ward, general secretary, said: “Today’s announcement comes less than three weeks after the closure of a major government consultation on the future of the Post Office and sticks two fingers up to everyone who took part in this.”
Last year 97 crown branches were earmarked for closure and almost half of them have been relocated into retail stores.
Roger Gale, Post Office’s sales and trade marketing director, said: “We’re committed to maintaining the Post Office’s special place on the high street and the changes we are making underpin our continued commitment to give communities in every part of the country access to essential services.
“We will take time to identify the right partners over the coming months and all proposals will be subject to local consultation.”
