Full-back joins Rs on short-term deal until January

Queens Park Rangers have signed former Swansea City defender Angel Rangel on a free transfer.

The experienced right-back left the Swans in the summer when his contract expired, but has agreed an initial five-month deal with the Rs.

Rangel adds experience and depth to the squad at right-back, with Osman Kakay currently deputising there for the injured Darnell Furlong.

The 35-year-old started his career in his native Spain, before joining Swansea in 2007.

Rangel helped the Welsh side to promotion from League One in his first season with the club, and was also part of the squad that went up to the Premier League in 2011 and won the League Cup in 2013.

However, the experienced full-back made just four league appearances for the Liberty Stadium club last term as they were relegated from the Premier League.

Rangel left Swansea when his contract expired in the summer, and the Spaniard is excited about his future at Loftus Road.

“I had a phone call from the manager (Steve McClaren) saying he was looking for some experience,” Rangel told the club website.

“I think the main word used was experience. He wants to use my Premier League experience as an important part of our game.

“I want to use every single weapon I have to help the team achieve their targets. I’ve seen lots of talent in training - from what I have seen we can only get better.

“I know I am not 20 anymore, but when you have been in the British game for so long, you gain experience and I think that’s what I can contribute day in, day out.

“I am delighted to be here and I hope I can help as much as I can.”
