A former England footballer had one goal in Wembley this weekend – to grab hold of a litter picker and drop rubbish into bags.

Gary Mabbutt MBE, Tottenham Hotspur’s club ambassador, joined volunteers from Keep Wembley Tidy (KWT) and Wembley Central and Alperton Residents Association (WCARA) on Sunday for the environmental clean up.

He said: “Looking after the area you live in and helping the environment is something we should all take pride in. With Wembley being the club’s home for this season, I am pleased to have been able to offer a helping hand to help keep the area tidier.”

The community clean-ups are organised as part of Brent Council’s Love Where You Live campaign.

Kay Carroll, a volunteer, said: “Our dedicated volunteers work tirelessly collecting litter and reporting fly-tipping hot spots.

“Each litter pick, we collect 20 to 30 bags of waste comprising beer cans and bottles, fast food packaging and confectionery wrappers.”

Cllr Eleanor Southwood, lead member for the environment at Brent Council, said: “Our ‘Love Where You Live’ campaign is inspired by the enthusiasm that many of our residents demonstrate week in, week out, to improve their local neighbourhoods. More and more residents are working with us to create a cleaner borough and I’d like to extend a big thank you to Keep Wembley Tidy and Gary for their fantastic support.”
