Chris Philp forks out almost 40,000

Tory candidate Chris Philp spent more on his election campaign for the Hampstead and Kilburn seat than any other prospective MP in the country.

Despite splashing out 39,739 on campaigning he lost the newly-created seat to his Labour rival Glenda Jackson by 42 votes.

The election for Hampstead and Kilburn was the only campaign in West and North West London where the biggest spender did not end up in Parliament.

In the area’s other constituencies the most expensive campaigns were victorious.

In Brent Central Sarah Teather outspent Labour rival Dawn Butler by almost 10,000 to win the seat for the Liberal Democrats.

Ms Teather overturned a 7,000 nominal majority to win the hotly contested seat which was also newly created.

The vast majority of the extra 10,000 spent by Ms Teather went on ‘unsolicited materials’ such as leaflets, according to data from the Electoral Commission.

The Conservatives spent their way to victory in Chelsea and Fulham, Cities of London and Westminster and Harrow East.

Conservative Bob Blackman, former Brent Council deputy leader, took the Harrow East seat from Labour.

In Westminster North, Hammersmith and Brent North, Labour candidates spent more than their rivals.

Across much of London Labour MPs managed to avoid falling victim to a UK-wide swing to the Conservatives.
