BRENT'S girls' table tennis team won gold at the London Youth Games in Redbridge on Saturday, with the boys also taking the bronze medal.

Managed by Andrew Rushton, both teams were from Wembley High Technology College, and the girls' pairing of Sushmita Limbu and Dipa Tamung won all six of their matches to take the title.

Three successive 5-0 victories in the singles and doubles matches accounted for Waltham Forest, Camden and Redbridge, which saw them top the first qualifying group.

In the second stage the girls finished both of their contests early, needing only to win their two singles games and the doubles match to beat Barnet 3-1 before Tower Hamlets also perished 3-1.

Limbu and Tamung met Hillingdon in the final and, after close matches in the singles, the girls put in a fantastic team effort in the doubles to win 3-1 and take the tournament.

The boys were also strong in the first group, beating Lambeth 5-0, Richmond 4-1 and Sutton 4-1.

Victories in the second stage followed against Newham and Barking & Dagenham, but Barnet ran out victorious in the final group match, denying Brent a place in the final.

However a play-off for third place was their just reward, and the boys overcame Ealing to take the final medal spot.

Meanwhile Brent's tennis team, ably managed by Elaina Forland and Rose Yip Henung Win, were also in action.

And Zack Evenden, who is ranked first in Middlesex at under-16 level, got them off to the perfect start against Lambeth with a 6-0 victory in the boys' singles.

Leanne Yip Heung Win also won 6-0 in the girls' singles, while the mixed doubles pairing of Vanisha Varsani and Jordan Angus won their tie 6-2.

Next the team faced one of the top boroughs, Hillingdon, and Brent ran out winners in a 2-1 overall victory.

The most difficult game was yet to come and, although Evenden again won his singles match, Brent narrowly lost out to Havering by two matches to one.

A superb 3-0 team victory over Merton followed, but that wasn't enough to displace Havering as group winners.

Brent's experienced trampolining team, led by manager Diane Moriarty, were mostly veterans of the London Youth Games.

The side, which included Kelly Booth, Sharna Henry, Marayo Lasekan and Sabrina Ferrier, performed very well and finished in seventh place.
