I have both my hands up and my feet – in fact I look like I’m exercising already.

In all seriousness at just under 5ft 3in and weighing ‘more than I should’ I really need to shift some timber not just for my sake but for my children’s too.

Plus my favourite fashion chain only goes up to a size 14!!

I’ve already had a stern talking to by my GP and have promised him that by March he’ll see a lot less of me – literally.

Mind you I also told a porkie when he asked me how much alcohol I consumed.

I took the real amount halved it and took away a few glasses to be on the ‘safe side’.

I’m sure all doctors know that formula and no doubt he wrote down the true amount on my medical records.

To be honest I don’t want to lose lots and lots of weight as the BMI chart can be discriminatory against curvy humans.

But I really want to up my fitness as it’s hard to believe two years ago I would run three mornings a week with ease.

Now I get exhausted just running a bath so I have joined Fit4less Gym in Kilburn.

Anyone who knows me will know I’m not the best of friends with willpower so personal trainer Adam Ferenc will be by my side to whip me into shape and so will you all.

Brent, like many boroughs in London, has an obesity problem so in future editions of the Times we will be encouraging more residents to become fitter and healthier.

There’s no denying it, being obese or even slightly overweight increases the risk of developing health conditions including type 2-diabetes, heart problems and high blood pressure to name a few.

So over the next few months we will be publishing a regular account of my battle to get fit which will include advice on what you can do to become fitter and healthier yourself, including details of council-initiatives on offer.

So off I go to Fit4less Gym thrice a week and I also intend doing a weekly run.

BUT, there’s no point in exercising if I have a bad diet so Adam has devised a food plan for me and I have to keep a food diary (yikes). Wish me luck and see you next week!
