Three community projects in Brent have won £30,000 between them after Tesco customers voted to help good causes.

The supermarket giant teamed up with Groundwork to launch its Bags of Help initiative where tiered grants raised from the 5p bag levy are awarded to outdoor projects.

Wembley Primary School was the biggest recipient with a grant of £12,000, Friends of Salusbury School in Queen’s Park won £10,000 and Friends of Mount Pleasant Open Space in Alperton was awarded £8,000.

Katie Atkinson, assistant headteacher at Wembley Primary School in East Lane, said: “We applied for the funding with the intent of building an ecological nature area within the school to be used for outside learning and held a poster competition to advertise it.

“We are very surprised, shocked and very grateful that people put in tokens for us.

“The children will be heavily involved in making up the area and we’ll get parents in so they should get their wellies and spades at the ready.”

Salusbury Primary school in Salusbury Road, will be spending their £10,000 on building an additional outside play area for their reception and nursery children which includes a climbing wall, mud kitchen, sand pit and water fountains set amongst newly planted trees and flower beds.

Debby Rigby, headteacher, said: “The parents and children really entered into the spirit of the competition and we are all thrilled to be one of the winning schools. Salusbury has been developing all the outside space around the school into exciting, creative, sport and play spaces and this early years garden will be a welcome addition.”

The Alperton community has transformed what was a “fairly derelict patch of grass” over the last few months with a pathway, flowerbeds and picnic area.

Ali Taylor, a member of Friends of Mount Pleasant Open Space, said: “It’s so exciting to receive this grant, we plan to make our park even better for the community by putting in some gym equipment. We asked members of the community what they wanted in the space almost two years ago, both on the Open Space and at Lyon Park primary school.

“It is wonderful to see it actually happening.”

From this month, Tesco customers will be able to vote for local groups all year round, every time they shop.

Customers will get the chance to vote for three different groups each month. At the end of each month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco’s regions will be awarded fund

Anyone can nominate a local project and local organisations can apply.
