Ousted minister promises to focus on supporting constituents.
Sarah Teather has spoken out for the first time since she was stripped of her role as a government minister and highlighted representing Brent residents as her ‘number one priority’.
The Liberal Democrat MP for Brent Central was one of many casualties yesterday as Prime Minister David Cameron re-shuffled his cabinet.
Miss Teather, who has been minister for children and families for the last two years, was ousted from her role and replaced by fellow Liberal Democrat MP David Laws.
Miss Teather said it had been a ‘huge privilege’ to work with the coalition government but was looking forward to supporting the government from the backbenches.
The MP has been criticised recently by the local authority and her constituents for keeping tight lipped on the impending closure of the A&E department at Central Middlesex Hospital, in Harlesden and for previously voting through a hike in tuition fees despite initially opposing plans.
She said: “My number one priority will continue to be representing my constituents, which has always been my first love.
“I am certain David will be an outstanding education Minister. We have been friends for many years and I am delighted for him that he has been given one of the best and most rewarding roles in Government.”
On her time in government, she continued: “I’m hugely proud of the part I have been able to play in ending child detention, and rolling out the pupil premium, giving free nursery places to disadvantaged two year olds, amongst many other achievements.”
She added: “I’m also looking forward to having a little more time for myself.“
