A primary school has closed after two pupils were diagnosed with swine flu.

Beckford Primary School in Dornfell Street, West Hampstead, will remain shut until next Monday as a precautionary measure.

Pupils with possible flu-like symptoms have been told to stay at home and contact their GP.

Those who came in close contact with the two pupils who contracted swine flu have been told they can continue as normal unless symptoms arise.

Dilys Hoffman, the school's headteacher, said: "Many pupils have been off ill with flu-like symptoms.

"I have therefore been advised by the Health Protection Agency to close the school for the rest of this week as a precaution. We will re-open next Monday June 22.

"If your child develops flu-like symptoms, phone your GP - don't take your child there.

"The local GPs know about this outbreak and will visit you to take a swab of your child."

Cllr Andrew Mennear, Camden Council's schools boss, said: "We are working closely with the school and local health professionals to ensure we have the most up-to-date information and guidance on dealing with swine flu and will make sure parents, teachers and the wider community are kept informed at all times.

"We must all act responsibly at this time and I would encourage everyone to take appropriate measures to prevent the spread of the infection.

"The council has posted a very useful guide book on its website which gives excellent hygiene advice and information on what to do if you begin to display flu like symptoms.

"We understand that this is a troubling time but we will do all we can to keep local families fully informed."

Last month South Hampstead High School in Netherhall Gardens was forced to close after a 14-year-old girl was diagnosed with swine flu.
