Second round: QPR 0 Swindon Town 2

Nile Ranger and Alex Pritchard scored for Swindon Town as QPR were knocked out of the Capital One Cup at Loftus Road on Tuesday night.

Ranger scored from inside the six yard box seven minutes before half-time, while Pritchard added a second in stoppage-time to send the League One side into the third round.

Swindon were good value for their win, with QPR barely threatening until the last half-hour.

Charlie Austin had a goal disallowed for offside late in the game, while Rangers also felt they should have had a penalty for a challenge on Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Midfielder Samba Diakite returned to the side to play his first match since April, while Alejandro Faurlin returned from injury and Jermaine Jenas also started. Bobby Zamora replaced Andy Johnson in attack, and in goal Rob Green made way for Brian Murphy.

Pritchard curled an early free-kick over Murphy’s crossbar, while Massimo Luongo saw his shot deflected wide for a corner as Swindon Town made a lively start.

Swindon keeper Wes Forderingham had little to do inside the opening 15 minutes, but was almost tested by Jenas, who flashed a half-volley narrowly wide of the post.

A foul on Diakite then presented Faurlin with an opportunity 25 yards from goal, but his free-kick was disappointingly off-target.

QPR’s attacks were sporadic and, with the hosts lacking a cutting edge, Swindon were playing the ball around comfortably. A rare half-chance for the home side ended with Zamora volleying Danny Simpson’s deep cross well over the bar.

Swindon had defended confidently for the first 35 minutes, and on 36 minutes they took the lead. QPR’s defenders switched off as Pritchard flashed a wicked low cross through the goalmouth, and former Newcastle man Ranger prodded in at the far post.

Swindon saw out the remainder of the half in similar comfort, with Shaun Wright-Phillips’ tame header from Jenas’s cross, easily saved by Foderingham, the most QPR could muster.

Charlie Austin dragged a shot wide from the edge of the penalty area shortly half-time

On 56 minutes, Redknapp send on Andy Johnson, QPR’s match-winner at Bolton on Saturday, in place of Zamora. Diakite also made way, replaced by 20-year-old Mo Shariff, making his Rangers debut.

A quick free-kick was headed wide by Austin from just three yards out, before Simpson’s dangerous cross skimmed through the six-yard box for a corner which Swindon cleared.

Town responded, with Clint Hill’s mistake allowing Louis Thompson a shot on goal, but his powerful strike was deflected away for a corner which Rangers scrambled away.

Jenas then set up Shariff for a shot which Foderingham kept out, before Shariff returned the favour for Jenas, but the midfielder’s shot was blocked by a Swindon defender.

Wright-Phillips missed a glorious opportunity when he ran on to a through-ball, placing his shot straight at Foderingham, who saved with his legs.

QPR thought they had finally found the equaliser when Austin headed in a free-kick from close range, only for his and the crowd’s celebration to be cut short by the offside flag.

Johnson went flying in on a cross from Yun Suk-Young but failed to make contact, before Wright-Phillips went down in the area under Thompson’s challenge, but the referee waved play on.

And Swindon made it safe in the second minute of stoppage-time, Pritchard breaking into the penalty area and keeping his cool to fire into the corner via a touch from Murphy.

QPR: Murphy, Simpson, Hill, Onuoha, Yun, Wright-Phillips, Jenas, Faurlin, Diakite, Zamora, Austin.
