A man who died after being hit by a van at Staples Corner three days before Christmas has been named as a 55-year-old demolition worker.

Patrick Downer, from Bedford, was killed as he walked on the slip road to the M1 southbound with two work colleagues on December 22.

Mr Downer was travelling inside a work van with four other demolition workers when it broke down on the northbound M1 at Staples Corner.

They called a recovery vehicle which took the van away and two of the men leaving Mr Downer and the others to catch public transport.

The driver of the van that hit Mr Downer stopped at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and causing death by careless driving.

He has been bailed to a date in late March pending further enquiries.

Detectives from the Roads and Transport Policing Command will be liaising with the Health and Safety Executive.

Any witnesses or anyone with any information is asked to call the Serious Collision Investigation Unit at Alperton traffic garage on 020 8991 9555.
