Tottenham Hotspur have reached a deal with Wembley National Stadium Limited (WNSL) for a one-month extension before deciding whether to play their home games at the national stadium next season.

The club were initially given until today to activate their option to play at Wembley, which has already been agreed with the Football Association.

That followed a contentious planning committee meeting last week when Brent Council voted to approve an application allowing Spurs to play 27 home games in front of a 90,000 capacity crowd in the face of overwhelming opposition from local residents and traders.

A deal has now been struck giving them until April 30 to monitor construction of their new ground before deciding on whether to decommission White Hart Lane.

A club statement said: “The club has agreed an extension until April 30, 2017, with Wembley National Statement Limited in respect of the option to play home fixtures next season at Wembley Stadium.

“This agreement has been reached in order to afford ourselves greater flexibility before making the final decision on the decommissioning of White Hart Lane.

“As we announced earlier we shall be carefully monitoring the progress of the construction programme and the public sector infrastructure delivery.

“Our intention remains to spend next season at the national stadium before returning to our new stadium in Tottenham for the 2018/19 season.”
