Queens Park Rangers earned a share of the Championship spoils with Sheffield Wednesday after a fine display at Hillsborough.

Following their opening-day win over Reading, Ian Holloway’s men made a bright start, but Daniel Pudil headed wide for the hosts on 12 minutes, from their first corner of the match, and Jordan Rhodes headed straight at Alex Smithies seven minutes later.

Rangers got a sight of goal on 21 minutes when Pawel Wszolek’s pullback found Jamie Mackie, whose low shot was saved by Keiren Westwood.

And they opened the scoring just two minutes later when Mackie latched on to Luke Freeman’s through ball and produced an excellent finish.

Wednesday had shouts for a penalty turned down on 40 minutes, with Tom Lees heading wide at the far post.

And Rhodes wasted a great chance to level just before the interval when slicing a cross from Adam Reach well wide of the target.

Smithies was called into action just two minutes into the second half to deny Sam Winnall’s right-footed drive, but the respite was brief for the visitors as a mistake by Nedum Onuoha was seized upon by Winnall and he made no mistake.

Rangers had a let-off on 53 minutes as Rhodes sent a downward header into the ground and over the crossbar from close range, but they weathered the storm and started to push forward themselves as play swung from end to end.

Freeman produced a superb run to beat three home defenders, only to fire straight at Westwood on 62 minutes, but the visitors had Josh Scowen to thank for clearing Gary Hooper’s effort off the line soon after.

Wszolek then broke at pace and forced Westwood into action with 13 minutes remaining, before Holloway sent Ryan Manning and Kazenga Lualua on for Freeman and Mackie.

But Scowen was booked for a foul on the edge of the box on 82 minutes, before Barry Bannan’s free-kick hit the wall and flew over the crossbar.

Rangers then had a great chance to regain the lead as Wszolek found Conor Washington, who unselfishly set up Lualua, but the substitute could not take the chance from eight yards as it ended all square.

Rangers are on their travels again in midweek as they head to Norwich City on Wednesday.
