KASPARS Gorkss nodded in his first goal for Rangers eight minutes from time to maintain their impressive away form at Hillsborough.

After picking up just a solitary point from their last two games, the Hoops earned a fourth away league win in six against a Wednesday side who could also have taken the points in the second half.

The Rs snatched an early lead through Jay Simpson before Jermaine Johnson netted soon afterwards for the Owls, who went all out in search of a win after the interval.

That equaliser seemed to kick the hosts into life as Tommy Miller hit the post, but Gorkss had the last say, rising highest from an Alejandro Faurlin centre to take the match.

If the final 80 minutes had mirrored the first 10, the Rs would have won this fixture at a canter.

Adel Taarabt was the architect of their 10th-minute opener, driving at the Owls defence with a trademark run before shaping to his right and slotting Simpson through on goal down the left.

Simpson stayed cool from 12 yards out, drilling the ball past Lee Grant into the right-hand corner of the net.

The early strike should have been a catalyst for a comfortable Rangers win, but the Owls had other ideas and equalised just four minutes later.

Johnson - a constant thorn in the Hoops' side before he was substituted late on - was the man who got the goal, brushing aside Mikele Leigertwood and slotting neatly past Radek Cerny.

The return of Matt Connolly, in place of the injured Fitz Hall, halted a wave of attacks, but the Owls proved much harder to deal with after half-time.

Former Ipswich and Sunderland man Miller sent a free-kick just wide and then smashed an effort against the foot of the right-hand post 20 yards out.

The visitors' defence had to be at their best as Wednesday got forward in numbers, and their solidarity was rewarded just eight minutes from time.

Rangers broke at pace through the ever-impressive Taarabt and when his shot went out of play for a corner, the Rs secured a win that lifted them to fourth, their best position of the season.

Faurlin sent in a teasing corner with his cultured left foot, and Gorkss rose to thump home a header in emphatic style.
