Restaurants and takeaways pledge to offer healthier options in Brent

A chain of fried chicken shops and a pizzeria are among the eateries that have promised to offer healthier options in a bid to tackle obesity in Brent.
The restaurants and takeaways in the borough have all been given a Healthier Catering Commitment for London award (HCC) for its healthier additions to its menus.
Examples include the option of smaller portions, leaving out salt so the customers has the choice of adding it, offering water and alternatives to sugary drinks and having a side of vegetables/salad available.
So far Sam’s Chicken; American Charcoal Grill; Manhattan Chicken & Pizza; Shambhu’s Vegan Catering Service; Sakonis Restaurant; Vale Farm Sports Centre; Walli’s Chicken in Wembley and The Sandwich People have all been given a HCC.

Sakonis in Ealing Road, Wembley hosted a healthier catering afternoon to promote their healthier choices.
The event also offered a free diabetes risk assessments, dietary advice specific to the South Asian community, exercises to enhance your mental wellbeing and an array of health resources and information.
Visitors also sampled healthier versions of popular dishes.
Cllr Krupesh Hirani, Brent Council’s lead member of adult health and wellbeing, presented Sakonis with their HCC award at the event.
He said: “It is great to see a restaurant showing commitment to supporting the health and wellbeing of their community.”
Kavita Thakrar, Manager at Sakonis, which specialises in Indian and Chinese cuisine, added: “It was great to see the local community come together and be proactive to take control of their own health.
“We cooked some of our favourite dishes using healthier ingredients and were pleasantly surprised with how everybody enjoyed them.”
