Residents on red alert as fire takes hold in Stonebridge

Householders warned to keep doors and windows closed

Residents in Stonebridge are being warned to keep their windows and doors closed after a scrap yard fire in the area has seen thick black smoke filling the air.

The blaze in Harrow Road, yards away from Stonebridge Park Station, has resulted in the area being cordoned off and the suspension of the Bakerloo Line north of the station due to safety concerns over gas canisters stored in the site.

Jan Nevill, Times photographer who took pictures at the scene, said he saw the smoke from his home in North Wembley, he added: “If you were close you could really smell it as it stuck in your throat. All the officers at the scene were wearing masks.”

Six fire engines and around 30 firefighters are tackling the blaze which began around 5.30pm.
