A scheme has been rolled out in Brent to recycle real Christmas trees bought this year to avoid them being dumped on streets.

The Kensal Green Safer Neighbourhood Panel (KGSNP) launched the project in conjunction with Brent Council and Veolia at a packed meeting at Newman Catholic College in Harlesden Road, Harlesden, last month.

Ian Britton, chairman of KGSNP said: “This is an important service because the trees get recycled, but also importantly they don’t finish up dumped on the streets or in landfill as many people cut them up and put them in their general rubbish, as they cannot get to the dump themselves.”

He added: “If residents in other areas of Brent get involved and connect with the tree selling outlets in their local area we would be able to really make an impact and ensure that as many trees as possible are recycled rather than just dumped on the street.”

If residents are signed up to Brent Council’s garden waste service, they can cut their tree into pieces and place those in their green bin.

They can also take it to the Reuse and Recycling Centre, in Abbey Road, Park Royal, which will be closed on January 1.
