Midfielder set up both goals for QPR in win at St Andrew’s

Queens Park Rangers midfielder Luke Freeman was delighted to end a run of six Championship games without a win by beating struggling Birmingham City 2-1.

Freeman set up both goals for QPR as a Jack Robinson brace secured the points for Ian Holloway’s men at St Andrew’s.

As well as being a first win in six for QPR, the success also ended a run of 17 away league matches without a triumph.

Freeman is fully aware of the importance of the success, but also knows it counts for little if the Rs cannot back it up with another triumph at against his former club Bristol City at Loftus Road on Saturday.

“We needed that three points,” the 25-year-old told the club website. “We were due one — and the fans were due one.

“It’s only one away win and we need to build on this now. Roll on the next game and hopefully we can get another three points.”

Robinson turned out to be the surprise matchwinner for QPR in the Midlands, having never scored in professional football before his brace against the Blues.

Freeman provided the assist for both goals, and he feels Robinson’s double was a fine reward for an impressive campaign to date.

“Jack’s been brilliant for us this season when we’ve had so many defensive problems and for him to score two goals is fantastic,” added the midfielder.

“The first was a great downward header, then he missed probably the easiest chance of the three that came his way, but then when I rolled the ball across the box for him, I wasn’t at all surprised to see him rifle it into the bottom corner.”

QPR’s recent winless run in the league had seen the west Londoners slide down the table after a solid start to the campaign.

The win over Birmingham saw the Loftus Road outfit move back up to 18th, and Freeman is keen to keep climbing up the standings in the coming weeks.

“We feel there have been a number of occasions when Lady Luck has gone against us this season on the road, so it was nice for things to go our way for once,” he said.

“Hopefully this is the kick-start we needed - and hopefully it can inspire us to go on a decent run now.”

A decent run for Freeman & Co. over the busy Christmas period would certainly help QPR move further away from the drop zone.
