Rs scored twice after interval to beat Brewers in Championship on Saturday

Darnell Furlong believes Queens Park Rangers gave a professional display in the second half of their 3-1 success at Burton Albion in the Championship.

After the first half ended 1-1 in Staffordshire, goals from Conor Washington and Massimo Luongo ensured the Rs won a second successive league match.

QPR rarely looked in trouble in the second 45 minutes against the Brewers and could have scored more than they did.

Regardless, Ian Holloway’s men moved nine points clear of the relegation zone, and Furlong was pleased with the second-half showing.

“We did what we had to. When you go 3-1 up, you don’t need another goal. We’d have liked another, but we didn’t need it,” the 22-year-old told the club website.

“Maybe it was because one or two more of us were staying back and keeping the ball.

“It’s all down to the runners who were getting in behind the defence and causing Burton problems.”

QPR had taken the lead in the first half against the Brewers, with Aramide Oteh netting his first goal for the west Londoners in the 32nd minute.

Furlong provided the assist for the goal, nodding the ball into the path of the young forward.

And the right back revealed the build-up play for Oteh’s goal was all part of boss Holloway’s game plan.

“The manager said the plan was to hit it wide and get runners off of it,” added Furlong, the son of Rs legend Paul.

“You can see that by who played up front, they’re good runners. When it’s come over, it’s a good ball by ‘Scow’ (Josh Scowen), so I tried to put it back into the danger zone and see what happened.

“I didn’t think it had gone in, I thought it had gone wide, but it was a nice feeling.”

At Burton, Furlong was making just his third league start of the season for QPR, and his first appearance since October 31.

Midfielder Pawel Wszolek and Jordan Cousins had been favoured in the right wing-back role over Furlong in recent weeks.

But the Rs academy graduate was happy to get his chance again at the Brewers and was pleased he could help contribute to a vital success.

“Just to play is an amazing feeling. The team played so well to get the win, which is an important win for us,” he said.
