Northern Ireland international scored opener for Rs in 2-1 Championship success at home to Wolves

Conor Washington believes Queens Park Rangers fully deserved their 2-1 win at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Championship on Saturday.

The Northern Ireland international fired QPR into a 41st-minute lead at Loftus Road, following up from close range after his initial effort was parried by Wolves stopper John Ruddy.

However, the west Midlanders were level two minutes later when Leo Bonatini tapped home from 10 yards.

But with nine minutes remaining, Matt Smith headed home the winner for the west Londoners, ending a run of seven games without a triumph for Ian Holloway’s side.

And Washington believes the hosts were good value for their success over promotion hopefuls Wolves.

“At half-time we were disappointed to be level, but we had confidence we could come again and get the goal,” the 25-year-old told the club website.

“We had a couple of chances — I had one which was cleared off the line after I lobbed the keeper, Freesy (Luke Freeman) had a shot which hit the bar, Matt had the header before his goal so we definitely had chances. They did as well, but I felt we deserved the win.

“It’s been a bit of a topsy-turvy season for us, but we always seem to do well against the teams towards the top of the division.

“I think the way we’re playing, the style of play, it seems to suit us more against teams who have the ball a little bit more than us.”

Washington’s goal against Wolves highlighted QPR’s determination in the match, with the Northern Irish forward quickest to react after Ruddy blocked his initial effort.

In the build-up to the goal, Washington also reacted fastest to the ball bobbling his way after a firm tackle in midfield by Massimo Luongo on Romain Saiss.

But Washington’s memory of the goal seems to centre on the former Peterborough United man taking a tumble in the aftermath.

“What do I remember about the goal? Falling over afterwards!” he joked.

“Me and Mass are always bickering about him passing to me and not passing to me, and he thundered into a great tackle on the edge of the box, and the ball shot at me. I got across the defender and from there I managed to put it in the back of the net.”
