Steve McClaren refused to be drawn on whether Queens Park Rangers could make the play-offs in the Sky Bet Championship after a 3-0 win at home to Sheffield Wednesday saw them Rs move to within touching distance of the top six.

Goals from Tomer Hemed, Luke Freeman and Nahki Wells helped the Loftus Road club beat the Owls and earn a fourth game without defeat in the league.

It has been a remarkable turnaround from the west Londoners, who have taken 20 points from their last 10 league games after not winning any of their first four.

McClaren, however, is not allowing himself to get too carried away and knows there is still a long way to go in the season.

“It’s too early. You’ve seen how tight it is. We are looking for performances, and consistency of performances, and that consistency so we’re competitive in every game,” said the 57-year-old.

“You see in the Championship, you win one game and then you lose the next. It’s erratic, but we’ve called for consistency and over the last four games, after a bad defeat at Swansea City, we’ve done that.

“The biggest thing you’ve got to do is react after defeats and bad performances, and what the team have done is every time we’ve had a bad performance and a bad result they’ve reacted.

“We’ll lose again, but it’s the reaction and the spirit in the dressing room that’s got to keep going.”

After goals from Hemed and Freeman had put QPR in control against the Owls, Wells came off the bench to seal the victory late on.

It was a first goal for the Bermuda international since joining on a season-long loan from Premier League side Burnley.

And McClaren was delighted the forward was finally able to get off the mark for the Loftus Road outfit.

“I think the spirit of the squad there, they’re more delighted for Nahki than anybody. That was perfect for us, for him to do that,” he added.

“He’s been frustrating but he’s never stopped working. He’s been great for the team and if you keep working and keep making runs you score goals. He knows that and hopefully he’ll go on from this.”
